Summer has finally arrived in Canada, which means it’s time to turn over your wardrobe for the hot weather. Whether you’re dressing for a professional environment, weekend getaway, or a big event (it is wedding season, after all), we’ve compiled some of the latest clothing trends to look for in order to update your closet for the summer.
You might find that some of the styles below can actually be adopted into your wardrobe by altering pieces you already own – perhaps you have a pair of pants that could be cropped for warmer weather, a dress that could use an update, or a jumpsuit that you might want to turn into a romper. For any adjustments, you can always reach out to our team at Love Your Tailor for all of your wardrobe needs. We’re always happy to take a look at photos of your items ahead of time to see what we can recommend in terms of alterations.
Now, onto the summer fashion trends we’re most excited about:
- Cropped Pant Hemlines
Hot on the heels of last year’s culottes trend, cropped pant hemlines have continued to pop up in all kinds of ways in many spring and summer collections. You might opt to break out your flowy culottes again this year, but for an updated look be sure to keep an eye out for the cropped pant hemlines on other trendy pieces, including jumpsuits, overalls and denim. What’s great about this look is that you can rock it with sneakers or sandals for a casual day, or with heels for a night out or formal event. For the evening, try pairing cropped pants with strappy sandals, a simple top and a blazer. Finish off the look with a great evening bag and bold earrings or bangles. For daytime, switch out the formal pieces (such as the clutch, heels and blazer) for a simple tank top and flat shoes, and you’ll have successfully transitioned your cropped pants into daywear.
- Smock Tops
A bit of frill is making its way into trendsetting wardrobes this season. Along the lines of the ruffles trend we saw so prominently in the spring, smock tops are back in style, but with a bit of an update from their 90s cousins. These days it’s essential to balance the frill of the smocking with a structured piece on the bottom – in fact, smock tops are the perfect items to pair with your cropped pants, provided they’re in a straight-legged, tailored material. The light and airy look of this shirt style is perfect for warm summer days, keeping you cool and stylish all at the same time.
- Tie-Front Tops
Another return from the 90s is the tie-front top. Back in the day, everyone from Jennifer Aniston to Mariah Carey rocked a tie-front top, and it’s now making a comeback. The 21st-century version looks best when paired with high-waisted pants (again, cropped pants work well!) or a high-waisted skirt or shorts. You’ll want to make sure that the proportions are balanced by wearing a small top with bottoms that cover most of your midriff, but perhaps allow a hint of skin for a hot summer night out.
- Rompers and Jumpsuits
Just as one-piece swimsuits have been making a major comeback in recent years, so too have one-piece outfits for both day and night. Rompers, which generally refer to one-piece jumpsuits with shorts instead of pants, have emerged in all kinds of colours and styles this season, so you’ll have a wide range of options to choose from if you decide to pick one up. For jumpsuit options, you’ll want to look for one that comes in a light material, particularly if you plan to wear yours to a summer event – no one needs the extra heat of a heavy fabric.
- Bold Patterns
Warm weather seems like it gives us an open license to be more bold and daring with our style choices – why be shy when the sun is shining and you’ve only got a limited amount of time to enjoy it? While it’s always good to have your basic staples and neutrals locked down for the summer (such as a denim skirt, comfortable shorts, and basic t-shirts in white and black), have some fun with your style by mixing in a bold and colourful print. What better time of year is there to rock a bright palm print, pineapple pattern or bold stripes in intense colours? We say, the bolder the better, so go for it!
- Nautical Details
Perhaps it’s because the oceans and lakes in Canada become far more available to us in the summer, but we all seem to go a little crazy for a nautical detail during warm weather. This year is no exception, but the 2018 update has brands offering bold, striped items in hues of blue that are reminiscent of the sea and sky. These patterns really pop when paired with bright white items in your wardrobe, such as shorts and shoes, and will make you feel as though you’re headed out on a cruise or a sailing adventure, even if you’re staying put for the weekend.
