Spring has finally sprung! Just like the fall, it’s a favourite time for fashionistas as transitional weather means more opportunities for layering and creating new looks.
Below, find five trends for Spring 2018 that can easily be incorporated into your wardrobe. You likely already have pieces that fit into these categories, so get ready to break them out for the new season.
1.Colours of the Season, Part 1: Lavender and Lilac
Like the millennial pink shade that came before them, lavender and lilac are the latest colours from the pastel family to make a big, trend-worthy comeback. These hues are everywhere this spring – brands have released tons of products in the makeup, accessories and clothing categories in a lovely pale purple. It’s likely no coincidence that both hues are associated with the florals that return to bloom in the spring.
There are lots of ways to approach this trend. A lilac shoe or nail colour can create a subtle nod to the trend in your everyday wardrobe. For those who really love this look and want to take a bold approach, brands like TopShop and Zara have provided head-to-toe options for swathing yourself in a light purple. In every case, lavender and lilac provide a fresh update to your wardrobe that fits perfectly with the spring weather.
2.Colours of the Season, Part 2: Bold Primary Colours
In terms of volume and boldness, the other trending colours of the season are at the opposite end of the spectrum from light purple. The primary colours of red, blue and yellow, particularly in their most saturated, unapologetic forms, have emerged as a major trend for this spring.
Reminiscent of your early school days, a bright primary colour accessory is the perfect addition to both your workday and weekend wardrobes. Paired with a suit, skirt or dress pants in a neutral shade, a primary colour piece will really pop. One of our favourite combinations is to pair light-wash jeans and a simple white t-shirt with at least one primary colour accessory – think of adding red or yellow shoes, a bold jacket or brightly coloured bag to your otherwise simple outfit, and you’ve got a great statement piece that’s easy to wear.
Just like lilac, this trend can also be worn in subtle ways. A pair of bright primary colour earrings, a small accessory or statement nail colour can also provide that trendy pop of colour. The trend is also yet another reason to reach for your standard red lipstick or nail polish and embrace a primary hue.
For the boldest take on this trend, the primary colours also look great when mixed together.
3.Pattern of the Season: Gingham
No longer relegated to just picnics in the park, gingham has made a big comeback in women’s fashion during the past couple of summers. It’s been a staple of preppy men’s fashion for years, but now it’s popping up on shoes, bags and clothes from all kinds of women’s brands.
What’s great about gingham is that it can be treated like a neutral. In the same way you’d wear a denim dress or simple shoe, you can swap in the gingham pattern and suddenly your look is fully updated for the new season. From a distance, subtle gingham patterns also take on a neutral look – it’s only up close that passers-by might note that you’re wearing this classic print.
Gingham also lends itself to some really fun spring and summer outfits. Combining the pattern in different colours in the same outfit can look surprisingly put-together, and combining it with entirely different patterns produces eye-catching looks that will make a great impression.
4.Ruffles
One of the most feminine trends to arrive this season is one we haven’t seen in prominence since the 90s. Ruffles have started to adorn almost every clothing item and accessory imaginable – from shirts and dresses, to shoes, bags and even earrings.
These aren’t your mom’s ruffles from decades past though – the 21st-century ruffle is decidedly more minimal and contained, adding a slight feminine touch to basic pieces we’re already familiar with.
In the right context, ruffles have a slightly formal look to them, making ruffled pieces the perfect addition to your work wardrobe. For weekend wear, dresses, shorts and rompers with ruffle details can be worn from day to night, with perhaps just a subtle change in accessories.
5.Straw Accessories
One of the most famous women to rock a straw handbag was fashion muse and adopted Parisienne Jane Birkin (yes – the Birkin Bag was named after her). The straw bag has since become a staple of the French cool-girl wardrobe, and given the multitude of think pieces and books that have been written about how to embody a Parisian woman, it’s no surprise that straw bags and accessories have come full circle and landed squarely in the lineup of major trends for 2018.
On the heels of the summer espadrille trend (which continues unabated), straw hats, shoes and bags in every shape and size are available in a variety of colours, styles and prices this spring. It’s the perfect addition to a summer weekend outfit, or a trip to the beach. The hats double as both fashion statement and sun protection, while straw shoes are one of the lightest materials that can be worn during hot summer days.
Straw bags look just as amazing with your beach cover-up as they do with denim jeans and shorts in the city. With so much variety, you’ll have your pick of all kinds of straw accessories this year. Just be careful not to go overboard in Canada – summer is not a long season!
